iSpeak: The New G.I. Bill
Pres. Bush and Sen. John McCain are opposed to the "New G.I. Bill" which significantly increases educational benefits for veterans. They argue that the bill is too costly and that a fully paid college education would drain the U.S military of personnel. Retired Army General Wesley Clark said of Bush and McCain's position, "It's offensive to suggest that we should fix the system so that civilian life is unappealing to service members, thereby forcing them to stay in the military." Do you think a fully paid college education encourages our service men and women to leave military service? Or is it a benefit that will help soldiers who may not have otherwise chosen to stay in the military advance in careers in the armed services? Share your thoughts.
Gee Whiz. Is it too much to ask that there be truth in advertising? I have heard the horror stories about the rude awakening vets have gotten when they tried to use their education benefits. It is a sad and ugly truth that America goes back on its word once fulfilling the promise is due. If Bush vetoes, Congress should override, no questions asked.
Pamela Moskowitz Labor-management consultant 1199SEIU/League TEF New York City | We should look at the reason why Bush and McCain are against this bill. No one is more pro-military than John McCain. We need to know the extent of what is in the bill.
Judy Piedmonte Service and maintenance Community General Hospital Syracuse, NY | I believe that not giving the young people their VA benefits is a great disgrace. Why not end the tax breaks to large corporations, or better yet the oil corporations that are the major beneficiaries of this war? Their profits have increased more than 100 percent. Every elected member of the government who first supported placing these young people in harm’s way should share their medical benefits with them and be taxed 20 percent of their income toward VA benefits. If you have can easily place our young people in danger, then you need to be willing to pay for your stance. If you invest in a unprofitable stock, you pay for it by losing your money. I believe it is time for our politicians to be brought into reality. There need to be personal consequences to their actions.
