In years to come, most Americans will be able to tell their friends exactly where they were and what they were doing on the evening of Nov. 4, 2008, when they learned that Barack Obama was elected to be the 44th President of the United States. It was one of those rare, magic and unforgettable moments—as is this entire period we are living through. There has never been a time like this in our lifetime. This is the beginning of a new era, and future students of American history will most likely talk of the periods Before Obama and After Obama.
This issue of Our Life and Times features the challenges this union has faced, as we come to year’s end. We have great reasons for pride and joy. But we also need to prepare for big challenges in 2009.
