Buffalo, NY: Major Kaleida Employee Groups Reject Managements Contract Offer
Nov. 22, 2008

Employees in seven bargaining units in the Kaleida Health System decisively rejected a management contract offer in balloting conducted last Wednesday by 1199SEIU. Members of two smaller units approved the offer. Employees in the units rejecting the offer total 86 percent the union's membership at the facilities. Each group voted separately on the contract, with the employee negotiating committee members urging rejection.

Prompted by New York Governor David Paterson’s sounding the alarm on the state’s budget deficit, more than 150 members of 1199SEIU, together with the Healthcare Education Project, traveled to Albany to speak with their elected officials. In meetings at the Legislative Office Building and in the Capitol, they discussed the consequences of cutting another $572 million from the already struggling healthcare industry. They came with a clear message to the legislature--“shared responsibility.”
