New York State Attorney General candidate Eric Schneiderman had a full schedule in the Capital Region last week that included a visit to 1199SEIU members and residents of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Delmar, and leading a “Justice on Main Street” roundtable at the Albany Public Library.
1199SEIU and 32BJ SEIU Endorse Gustavo Rivera For State Senate

1199SEIU and Local 32BJ SEIU announced their joint endorsement of Gustavo Rivera for State Senate in New York's 33rd Senatorial District. With high membership density in the 33rd, both 1199 and 32BJ are making this race top priority for the primary and general elections. Both unions will soon be starting with direct mail, live phone calls and ground troops to mobilize union members on Rivera's behalf.
From New Jersey to New York’s Capital Region, 1199SEIU Delegates are Sworn into Office

Last week, 1199SEIU activists from Southern New Jersey to New York’s Mohawk Valley were sworn in as Union Delegates by President George Gresham and Secretary-Treasurer Maria Castaneda. They were elected at their workplaces in the spring by their 1199 SEIU co-workers and took their oaths at Delegate Assemblies in Iselin, New Jersey on July 14th and in Albany, New York on July 15th.
Capital Region Nursing Home Workers Win Their Contract

It wasn’t easy, but more than a hundred 1199SEIU members at Guilderland Center Nursing Home in New York’s Capital Region have a new contract. The settlement not only maintains the workers’ current healthcare benefits, but also the employer agreed to the necessary increases that will keep the 1199 Upstate Pension Fund secure.
This year, 1199SEIU had 13 participants. With a sense of great urgent, 31 members the leadership class went to Albany in June. In the midst of a horrible economic recession, they brought a message to the elected officials regarding issues that are important to each affiliate.
Western New York Nurse Council Holds Workshop on A New Breast Cancer Screening Machine

The western New York 1199SEIU Nurse Council held a workshop on June 14, focusing on the GammaGram; a new technology available for breast cancer screening. The GammaGram at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY is tje only one available in the region. GammaGram is 97 percent accurate, with superior clarity and no breast compression.
1199SEIU Develops Partnerships for NY’s First Patient Lab and Training Center

Pat McCarthy an RN at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and 1199SEIU’s Western NY director for safety and health, joined other area unions, the Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health (WNYCOSH) and the University of Buffalo to announce the opening of New York State’s first Safe Patient Handling Lab and Training Center.
“Enough is Enough, No More Cuts!” 1199ers Respond To NY Budget:

When 1199ers got the last-minute word that the NYS Legislature was poised to pass a budget extender bill that would include $775 million in cuts to healthcare funding, they put on their purple T-shirts and went to the state Capitol in Albany to make their voices heard.
1199SEIU healthcare workers will gather for a candlelight vigil on Saturday, March 6 at 4:00 p.m. at 1 Wartburg Place in Mount Vernon, New York, as part of their campaign to save and protect their pensions.
Holiday shoppers in downtown Albany, NY last week might have bumped into a couple of friendly cherub faced, red-suited Santas. But at the County Office Building at 112 State Street, it was the lanky green Grinch, known for stealing Christmas, who attracted most of the attention.
