Carl Bussey Floor Tech/Georgetown University Hospital/ DC
Carl Bussey, a Floor Tech at Washington DC’s Georgetown University Hospital for eight years, became a Delegate when a co-worker convinced him to be more active in the Union. “I really liked the Delegate training and learned how to deal with worker’s cases and negotiating with management from the classes and meetings,” he says. “Our workers always come to us with their problems and we help them,” he says. “We helped a worker who got into an argument with her supervisor and got sent home for a day. We met with the supervisor and got the member’s pay for the day restored. In another case, a member’s check was short because it didn’t include overtime, so we got his overtime restored. “One of my favorite experiences as a Delegate was attending the swearing-In in New York City in June. It brought chills to my spine and excitement when I saw former President Bill Clinton on stage. Then the Rev. Al Sharpton came to the stage. His words carried straight through the meeting by using some good old preaching that had me just clapping and stomping my feet like we were having church right there. He told us that the Union is strong and that we have the power to clear the way for healthcare workers. Ain’t no stopping us now! “The swearing-in gave me pride to be who I am -- a Union Delegate.”
