Myra HolidayBuffalo General Hospital / Buffalo, NY
Myra Holiday, a union Delegate at Buffalo General Hospital and a rank-and-file member of the 1199SEIU Executive Council, is taking a personal approach to fighting Governor Spitzer’s and President Bush’s proposed cuts to the state health care budget. In addition to distributing postcards for people to sign to let Governor Spitzer know his proposed cuts are not acceptable, Holiday has been talking one on one with her relatives, members of her church, and neighbors in her community. The discussions have centered on the significant impact these proposed cuts will have on everyone who receives health care services, from delays in service to relied-on facilities closing down. “I give a personal perspective of what is in the news so people realize they need to pay attention to these cuts from Spitzer and Bush,” Holiday says. “If Spitzer has his way it will really affect our community, especially on top of already painful closings from the Berger Commission,” she asserts. Holiday has also been using her role as Delegate to have meaningful conversations with members at Buffalo General Hospital about the long-term impact of this year’s proposed budgets. “If these cuts go through, it will affect our 2008 contract campaign, and people have to know that” explains Holiday.
